The ASUS ROG Ally X is a significant upgrade to the original ROG Ally handheld gaming PC, focusing on addressing user feedback and enhancing key features. Here’s a detailed description:

Design and Ergonomics:

• Color: The Ally X sports a new black chassis, a departure from the original white, giving it a more understated and perhaps wider appeal, aligning it visually with devices like the Steam Deck and MSI Claw.  
• Ergonomics: The design has been refined with rounder edges and more substantial, chunkier handles. This aims to provide a more comfortable and secure grip for longer gaming sessions.
• Weight and Dimensions: While slightly heavier at 678 grams (compared to the original’s 608 grams) and a bit thicker (24.7~36.9 mm vs. 21.2~32.4 mm), the weight distribution is improved. The added weight is primarily due to the larger battery.  
• Rear Buttons: The two assignable grip buttons on the back have been made smaller to reduce accidental presses.

Display:

• Size and Resolution: It retains the same 7-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) touchscreen IPS panel as the original.  
• Refresh Rate and Brightness: The 120Hz refresh rate and 500 nits of brightness also remain, offering smooth visuals for gaming.  
• Variable Refresh Rate: It supports FreeSync Premium for tear-free gaming.  
• Touch: The display is a 10-point multi-touch screen.  
• Protection: It’s protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.  

Performance:

• Processor: It’s powered by the same AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor (“Zen4” architecture with 4nm process, 8 cores/16 threads, up to 5.10 GHz boost). The GPU is the integrated AMD Radeon Graphics (RDNA 3 architecture with 12 CUs, up to 2.7 GHz, up to 8.6 Teraflops).  
• RAM: A significant upgrade is the inclusion of 24GB of LPDDR5X-7500 RAM, a substantial increase from the original’s 16GB LPDDR5. This provides more memory bandwidth and allows the integrated GPU to have more dedicated VRAM, improving performance, especially with higher texture settings.
• Storage: The Ally X comes with a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD (2280 form factor). This is double the base storage of the original and uses a more standard and easily upgradeable M.2 2280 slot, unlike the original’s M.2 2230.  
• Operating Modes: It offers different operating modes to balance performance and power consumption, ranging from a silent 10W mode to a Turbo mode that can reach 25W on battery or 30W when plugged in.  

Battery:

• Capacity: The battery capacity has been doubled to 80Wh, addressing a major concern with the original Ally’s battery life. This significantly extends playtime, allowing for longer gaming sessions on the go.

Connectivity:

• USB-C Ports: A key improvement is the addition of a second USB-C port. One port supports USB 3.2 Gen 2 with DisplayPort 1.4 and Power Delivery 3.0, while the new port supports USB4 (Thunderbolt 4 compliance), DisplayPort 1.4 with FreeSync support, and Power Delivery 3.0. This provides more flexibility for charging and connecting peripherals, including external GPUs.
